 cannot work since  
 stCal.add ( Calendar.MONTH,1 ) ; sends void back

After the 'clear (  ) ' is called, the time value of this Calendar is  
 undefined as stated in the JavaDoc. You need to call BOTH clear 
  ( Calendar.HOUR )  AND clear ( Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY )  to reliably set the  
 time portion of a Calendar object to 0:0:0.0, calling only one of  
 these is insufficient.
